Influenced by Republicanism, but not a True Republican essays
Impacted by Republicanism, however not a True Republican expositions Impacted by Republicanism, however not a True Republican The way of thinking of a republican type of government was positively not a production of James Madison and the Federalists. The possibility of such a legislature has been around since the start of political way of thinking. While the definition has changed throughout the hundreds of years, certain constants keep on characterizing a carefully republican system. The objectives and needs of a republic are particular yet divergent from those of James Madisons reasoning. For the most part, a republican government is characterized as one which glorifies the open interests as the most elevated great and forces an obligation on every resident to progress in the direction of the open interests before singular ones. Because of the impact of normal rights savants, Madisons thoughts are not carefully republican regardless of the way that he believes them to be so. Not some time before Madison, a French scholar named Montesquieu composed a few works about old style republicanism. One significant case he remained by was the deep rooted thought that political ethicalness implies self-renunciation. At the end of the day, the objective of governmental issues is for people to degrade egotistical interests and rather work to accomplish the interests of the whole network. Montesquieu accepted that a fair government ought to guarantee the interests of the general population and give little consideration to the worries of the person. This kind of prudence is like that of antiquated logicians Plato and Aristotle. While Madison strays from the objectives of Montesquieus government, he receives a large number of his thoughts including the making of a fair government that ensures people in general. Montesquieus accentuation on the detachment of government into three divisions is a thought that Madison adjusted in the Constitution. In the republican government, balanced governance are important to keep the administration working for the individuals rather than the converse. The most shrewd of men are to speak to the pe... <!

What are Balloon Payments
What are Balloon Payments What are Balloon Payments? What are Balloon Payments?Donât let your loan blow up in your face.Balloons are wonderful, arenât they? While adults may understand that balloons float because they are filled with a gas that is lighter than air, to children, balloons might as well be magic. Children love balloons, even after they realize they wonât be able to fly with them no matter how many they hold at once.Unfortunately, as we age, not only do we begin to understand how balloons work, but it may come to light that there are some dangerous balloons out there. These dangerous balloons include hot air balloons and balloon payments. However, today we will only be talking about one of these: balloon payments.Balloon paymentsA traditional amortized or installment loan is structured so the borrower pays off part of the principal (or original amount borrowed) and interest in regular, consistent amounts. That means the borrower will be able to pay off the entire loan in a known time frame without any surprises. Ball oon loans are different than traditional amortized loans.âInstead of fixed monthly borrowing payments that gradually eliminate debts and establish credit, balloon loans are paid off with large single payments when a loan has reached maturity,â warned Beverly Friedmann, content manager for ReviewingThis. These are called âballoon paymentsâ because the last payment is inflated relative to the previous payments the borrower has been makingâ"significantly inflated, as Friedmann explained. âBalloon payments are typically at least twice the amount of a loans prior regular payments,â she said. âThey can apply to mortgages, business financing, commercial loans, and other types of amortized loans (i.e. auto payments).âRisky businessIt is vital that you know if you will be facing a balloon payment at the end of your loan payments so you can have enough money set aside to pay for the increase. However, even if you did have the foresight to set aside money, you might still end u p in trouble.âThe greatest risk with balloon mortgages is that the property goes down in value, rather than appreciating,â said Brian Davis, co-founder of SparkRental.com. âIn that case, the borrower often canât refinance or sell without taking a loss.âWhile mortgages with balloon payments may have better initial rates, the risks should not be underestimated.Consider your optionsBrain Davis made it quite clear that you are going to want to avoid balloon payments if possible: âUnless borrowers know for a fact that they will be selling the property within the balloon period, I recommend they avoid balloon mortgages and take out a 15- or 30-year fixed mortgage.âWhat other options could you consider? Here are a few possibilities.Selling your home: âSelling whatever property was loaned (i.e. a home, car) is another option prior to an impending balloon payment if you dont have the funds to cover it,â Friedmann advised. âIn the case of homeownership, this is often to av oid foreclosure and/or filing for bankruptcy.â However, the housing market may help to determine if this is a wise option. âThis can be a difficult process if the housing market has changed since you invested in your property, and you may find yourself making less than what you paid into it in the first place.âRefinancing: âIf youre in good financial and credit standing, you may decide to refinance your balloon payment by taking out another loan,â Friedmann said. âThis new loan may add several years to your repayment structure plan, allowing you some time to restructure your finances into a more feasible and longer term payback system. You might even refinance a home loan into a long term mortgage. The only drawbacks to refinancing is that your interest rates might rise, and you wont be able to utilize this option without good credit, income, and assets.âWait on buying: It might be worth holding off on buying a home for now. While you may have been told that renting is equivalent to throwing your money away, this is not necessarily the case. Homeownership comes with many unexpected costs, so if you are not certain that you will be staying in the home for a long time, then it is probably smart to rent for now.The American DreamOwning a home has long been part of the American Dream, and there are a lot of mortgage brokers who are willing to take advantage of the desire for a home to stick you into a loan you can not manage. Always do your research and consult whichever experts you can before you lock yourself into any financial commitment, especially if it is as large and lengthy as a mortgage.ContributorsBeverly Friedmann works as a content manager for the consumer website ReviewingThis, has a background in sales and marketing management, and is from New York, NY. William Faulkners Major Works and Themes - 938 Words
Major Works And Themes Faulknerââ¬â¢s works consisted of many dark touchy topics such as war, racism, mental illness and suicide in all of books, short stories, William Faulkner wrote about almost every part of life, from something that could be absurd at his time, to something real like racism in the American South. Throughout his life, Faulkner was kind of a rebel, notorious for his confidence, drinking, and he would often make up stories about himself. Faulkner wrote from experience and as a person who lived in the south during times of racism, he wrote about a lot of things in the south. To be exact his specific genre or style in which he wrote in is what some call ââ¬Å"southern gothicâ⬠. Southern gothic is a unique style of writing and only expressed by very few authors. These stories usually take place only in the south and have darkness to them. His stories would use irony to examine the values of the American south. Instead of solely trying to add suspense with the style it is also used t o explore social issues and cultural character of the south. Which leads me to one of Faulknerââ¬â¢s first important novels ââ¬Å"Sartorisâ⬠. In Sartoris Faulkner focuses on a family during the world war era in the south. In the book the Sartoris family is one of the more important families in Yoknapatawpha County where the book is set. The Particularities of Being a Teenager - 652 Words
The teenage years are a very stressful time. Teenagers go through many confusing stages and feel emotions that they have never felt before. They change in ways they never thought they would. In some cases best friends become distant memories, loving homes become hateful prisons and minor situations become violent ordeals. As someone who is still going through the teenage years I can relate to all these behaviors. Being a teenager is not easy. Teenagers feel pressure to look and act in ways that they are not. Being a teenager also means over-reacting about the littlest situations and thinking that no one understands them. The life of a teenager is more complicated than it seems but there are several causes that make teenagers act the way they do. Teenagers are very self-conscious about their body and the way they look. They have to look good all time, especially if they are a girl. Weather they are going to a party or on a midnight trip to Walmart they have to look presentable. I am guilty of this teenage trait, I even straighten my hair before I go to pool parties, even though it is just going to get wet and curl back to normal. But, it is not always easy for a teenager think they look good when they hate the way they look. They hate their hair because itââ¬â¢s too curly or straight. Our version is more comprehensive. Most of our top managers havenââ¬â¢t held jobs in their countries of origin for years and view themselves as global citizens rather than as citizens of any given nation. But we donââ¬â¢t want to be known as an AngloDutch enterprise, or by any other label based on our operations or history. Weââ¬â¢re not any countryââ¬â¢s companyââ¬âweââ¬â¢re a truly multicountry company. That is by design. Postmerger we mixed the national cultures quickly in every corner of our operations. Premerger many of the local businesses had been running themselves more or less independent of the rest of the world and without regard to overall corporate priorities. We transferred people who embodied RBââ¬â¢s values into key positions in new markets. Managers from one side of the merger were purposely moved to another territory, and then moved again. Now in every country we have people of many nationalities as well as local citizens. Today an Italian is running the UK business, and an American is running the German business. A Dutchman is running the U. S. business, an Indian the Chinese business, a Belgian the Brazilian business, and a Frenchman the Russian business. Itââ¬â¢s not that you canââ¬â¢t advance at RB in your local company. You can. But we also offer unique global mobility and experience to people who want to grow their careers on a world stage. To facilitate this mobility, we established compensation rules that apply equally to our top 400 managers in all markets, making international transfers easy. We have just one employment contract, and our salary ranges were developed with global benchmarking. Our annual cash bonus structure and long-term incentive plans are the same for everyone, as are our pensions, medical plans, and other benefits. We have no expatriates in the traditional sense, no tax equalization or guarantee of a job back in oneââ¬â¢s home country. When employees take jobs in other countries, theyââ¬â¢re transferred as ââ¬Å"local hires. â⬠Weââ¬â¢ve built in standard protocols to make it easier for people with families to move. For example, we fund whatever school the employee chooses for his or her children because we understand how important that is to a familyââ¬â¢s adjustment. That way, we can instantly accomplish a transferââ¬âwe donââ¬â¢t have to negotiate a lot of convoluted contractual nonsense. We have moved people to new countries in as little as two days. We also do something pretty rare with graduates. In some markets we help foreign students to get work permits in the countries where theyââ¬â¢ve been studying. The very fact that they have traveled to study means they are internationally minded and thus likely to be keen to work in other countries as well. At a lot of companies itââ¬â¢s assumed that employees, having ââ¬Å"seen the world,â⬠will sooner or later return to their home countries to continue their careers. Our idea is that you focus primarily on the best job possible for you, regardless of country. That kind of life isnââ¬â¢t for everyone, and not everyone has to follow that path. But those who love it really love it. Itââ¬â¢s exciting, and it gives pace, challenge, learning, and a buzz to peopleââ¬â¢s careersââ¬âalong with the satisfaction of being able to be entrepreneurial and innovative. We try to put our high potentials in stretching situations around the globe. For example, we had one excellent employee who wanted to be moved to an international marketing job. We had an opening in India, but that would have been a poor choice for himââ¬âheââ¬â¢s Indian. Our previous three marketing people in India were German, French, and British. If this employee wanted to grow, he needed to acquire different experiences and learning, so a better development opportunity would be for him to work in Brazil or Mexico. Our high potentials have to find their footing very quickly, and most of them grow tremendously when we take them out of their familiar zone. One of our top managers, who is Dutch, still talks about the hard lesson he learned when we transferred him to Turkey. In The Netherlands, where he had worked before, billing and receivables were predictable and orderly. In Turkey the currency suddenly collapsed by 70%ââ¬âwhile he was focusing on market share rather than on delinquent receivables. As he puts it, thereââ¬â¢s nothing like a currency failure to change your views on tight financial management. If you donââ¬â¢t express your opinion, you donââ¬â¢t have an opinion, and thatââ¬â¢s a fatal weakness for people who want to do well at Reckitt Benckiser. That means our meetings are a bit chaotic. Everybody wants to be heard, so itââ¬â¢s more like an Italian family dinner than a nicely organized board meeting. What takes over in our meetings is an intensity and a feeling that we have to ght for better ideas. Con ict is good. We donââ¬â¢t care about consensus. Not having it doesnââ¬â¢t slow us down and doesnââ¬â¢t mean that people arenââ¬â¢t aligned. We make decisions fast and then all stand behind them. What isnââ¬â¢t tolerated is conflict that simply slows down decision making or is for political or personal gain. Almost every key decision is made in the meeting at which itââ¬â¢s rst discussed. We expect people to come armed with facts, be prepared to argue their point of view, and be willing to live with the decision we ultimately make. Get 80% alignment and 100% agreement to implement. And move quickly. But I also donââ¬â¢t believe in crushing minority views. If we have 10 people in a room, eight of them agreeing on one thing and two passionately believing something else, we donââ¬â¢t try to resolve it to everyoneââ¬â¢s satisfaction. We allow those two to experiment with their ideasââ¬âeven if everyone else thinks theyââ¬â¢re wrong. At the end of the day, what counts is not what the 10 people in that room think, itââ¬â¢s what the consumer thinks. So we let them run maverick smallscale experiments to get consumer feedback. Sometimes our biggest ideas come that way. About six years ago we had a huge internal debate about a product called Air Wick Freshmatic, which automatically releases freshener into the air on a schedule. It originated when one of our brand managers in Korea observed a new kind of automatic scent dispenser in stores there. In his opinion it was not a well-designed product, but he thought the idea was intriguing, so he brought it to a group meeting at our headquarters. Vigorous debate ensued. April 2010 Harvard Business Review 105 With so many different native languages in our company, it was necessary to make English the official language for all meetings. Iââ¬â¢m Dutch, but I donââ¬â¢t speak Dutch with any of my Dutch colleagues, because if others are around, it excludes them. We are one team with one language. English isnââ¬â¢t most peopleââ¬â¢s native language, and often our English isnââ¬â¢t pretty. But the way we see it, it doesnââ¬â¢t matter as long as you give a view. If you donââ¬â¢t express your opinion, you donââ¬â¢t have an opinion, and thatââ¬â¢s a fatal weakness for people who want to do well at Reckitt Benckiser. ORG RBââ¬â¢s Performance-Based Remuneration Reckitt Benckiser believes it has designed a compensation plan to foster its innovative and entrepreneurial culture. The company has touted performance-oriented pay in its annual report as key to RBââ¬â¢s strong growth. According to a 2006 Harvard Business School case study, the plan, which applies to the companyââ¬â¢s top managers (including the CEO), consists of three parts: base salary, short-term incentives, and long-term incentives. Base salaries are set near the median for competitorsââ¬â¢ pay. The real bene? comes in the form of bonuses. A manager who meets all targets will typically receive 40% of his or her base salary as a bonus that year. A manager who blows the targets out of the water A manager who blows the targets out of the water can earn a bonus of up to 144%. (usually that means doubling the target numbers) can earn a bonus of up to 144%. Long-term compensation, in the form of options and perf ormance-related restricted stock, depends on meeting three-year corporate growth targets for earnings per share. New long-term goals are put into place each year. Karen Dillon A couple of our managers believed it should be a consumer product in Europe, but a lot more thought that made no senseââ¬â it might work in Korea on a very small scale, but it would never work in Western markets. For one thing, it would have to be priced well above the standard air freshener, and it wasnââ¬â¢t clear that the market would support that. Also, this would be our rst foray into something electronic, with wires, batteries, interval switchesââ¬âa complex technology combination. The product would require new manufacturing facilities if it went to any scale. But two people meant we had to source materials we had no prior experience with. Today Air Wick Freshmatic is sold in 85 countries, with a wide range of options for consumers. It generates well in excess of ? 200 million annually. That product had the most successful launch in our history. Of course, things donââ¬â¢t always work out that well. Weââ¬â¢ve launched some beautifully thought-out products that we were passionate aboutââ¬âbut consumers werenââ¬â¢t. A few years ago we introduced a wonderful product to clean your microwave: You put a little sachet into the oven and start it. While If someone wants to stand up under stress and say, ââ¬Å"No, I passionately believe in this,â⬠then Iââ¬â¢m willing to take a chance. saw the potential and were willing to ght for the chance to prove it. If somebody wants to stand up under stress and say, ââ¬Å"No, I passionately believe in this. You guys are all wrong! Weââ¬â¢ve got to do this,â⬠then Iââ¬â¢m willing to take a chance. So in this case I said ne, hereââ¬â¢s the moneyââ¬â go gure it out, but do it on a small scale. And thatââ¬â¢s what they did. In January 2004, initial testing of the idea with consumers in the UK produced extraordinary results. By the end of the year the product was in more than 30 other countries, and weââ¬â¢d overseen the building of a new factory in China to make itââ¬âwhich 106 Harvard Business Review April 2010 the oven is heating, the sachet pops and spreads cleaner around. When itââ¬â¢s nished, the sachet has become a cloth to wipe your cleaner away. It was a beautifully designed product. But it turns out that people donââ¬â¢t actually want to clean their microwaves all that often, so we pulled it from the market. If we are going to fail, we want to fail small and quickly. Failure is actually a huge incentive for the kind of people who fit well with our company, because theyââ¬â¢re so personally competitive that theyââ¬â¢ll work even faster for the next success. Everyone wants to do something to get on the map. I just moved one manager from Chile to Turkey. He earned that move because he had done something very challenging in his marketââ¬âheââ¬â¢d launched one of our ââ¬Å"powerbrands,â⬠the sanitizer Dettol, in Latin America. It wasnââ¬â¢t the biggest success weââ¬â¢ve ever had, but the point is that he did it. He was the guy who brought Dettol to Chile and created a platform for its growth. Thatââ¬â¢s his mark on the business. That kind of thing earns you a promotion in this company, and the promotion will probably take you to another part of the world. Some people look at us and think theyââ¬â¢d have to be nuts to work here. Weââ¬â¢re looking for people with a certain level of maturity, intensity, and competitiveness. If you bring all of that to Reckitt Benckiser, it will be rewarded. (See the sidebar ââ¬Å"RBââ¬â¢s Performance-Based Remuneration. â⬠) As the CEO who has guided the company for more than a decade, Iââ¬â¢d like to take credit for having a brilliant strategy or unique insights into the global marketplace. But in reality the ââ¬Å"visionâ⬠slide we use today is the exact same one weââ¬â¢ve used since the merger. We have a very simple approach to the business: Focus on 17 powerbrands in fast-growing categories, innovate and invest behind themââ¬âand do so in every market. At the end of the day, what is most distinct about Reckitt Benckiser is its people and culture. I can tell in three minutes if someone would be a good t for our company. Weââ¬â¢d rather have a position open for a long time, if necessary, than put the wrong person in place. Itââ¬â¢s that important. The Misanthrope Essay Research Paper The MisanthropeHave free essay sample
The Misanthrope Essay, Research Paper The Misanthrope Have you of all time noticed what the difference between a popular individual and a individual that is seldom of all time noticed? Well, if you truly analyze the issue, it normally is for one really obvious ground. The popular individual will ever hold something that about everyone else doesn? Ts have but that everyone else wants. In the drama, The Misanthrope, which was written by Moliere, Celemine is at the centre of attending. Celemine is the object of everyone # 8217 ; s attending merely because she has what every other character in the drama wants. Arsinoe makes Celemine the centre of attending because she likes Alceste, one of the many work forces that has a stamp for Celemine # 8217 ; s love ; The work forces adore her because they want to be the lucky one to hold her wholly for themselves ; Others adore her because she has humor and gustatory sensation. Both, Arsinoe and Eliante have a crush on the adult male that is frantically and blindly in love with Celemine ; his name is Alceste. Both adult females urgently hope that things will non work out between Celemine and Alceste. Envious, Arsinoe tries to upset Celemine by doing false rumours about her. She claims that she is seeking to be a friend to Celemine by stating her all of the bad things that people are stating about her, when it is really obvious that she is merely seeking to set down Celemine because Alceste is frantically in love with her. Following, Arsinoe, out of green-eyed monster, accuses Celemine of purchasing her fondness. She claims that she could merely as easy win the awe of work forces if she really tried or cared plenty. Besides, Arsinoe tries to convert Alceste that he deserves better than Celemine. Arsinoe provinces, # 8220 ; I could in a heartfelt way wish your passion better placed # 8230 ; # 8230 ; She who allures you is unworthy of you. During these few lines, Arsinoe is seeking to state Alceste that Celemine does non merit his love and that she would be better for him so Celemine would. Finally, Arsinoe is speedy to support Alceste when he is ferocious at Celemine, trusting to win him over. She accuses Celemine of making Alceste indignity by forging her love for him. She accuses Celemine of perpetrating the darkest of the universe # 8217 ; s workss because mislead Alceste # 8217 ; s bosom. However, this avid attempt of Arsinoe # 8217 ; s does non win her the favour of Celemine. These are a few of the illustrations that show us that Celemine is at the centre of attending of Arsinoe. The work forces adore Celemine because they want to be the lucky one to hold her wholly for themselves ; this, I suppose would do them experience particular, since about all of the male characters want her. Celemine has seemingly promised all that hold fondness to her, that she loves merely them. This causes all of the work forces to believe that they are the 1 that she entirely loves. First, Celemine replied to Alceste, # 8220 ; The felicity of cognizing that you are loved, # 8221 ; when he asked what advantage he had over the other work forces. In this message Celemine is pass oning with Alceste that he is the lone one whom she loves. This keeps Alceste as a captive of her love, believing that she loves merely him. Next, Celemine has seemingly made it certain to her other three lovers that they are the 1s that she held her fondness for ; she seemed to hold done this in separate letters that she had written to each of the work forces. Celemine efficaciously captivated all of the menââ¬â¢s Black Marias by assuring each of them that they were so the 1 that she loved. Acaste replied, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve some evidences, Marquis, for believing so, â⬠when he was asked by Clitandre if he thought that Celemine fancied him. In this transition where Acaste showed such assurance, it is really evident that Celemine made it really clear of her fondnesss for him every bit good. This is the same instance for the other two work forces besides. Each adult male merely stayed around in her worship because they genuinely believed that they were the particular adult male in her life. None of the work forces knew that her stamps were in fact really faithlessly. Their involvements change at the terminal of the drama when Celemineââ¬â¢s true purpose for mere attending is unraveled. Finally, the last ground that Celemine is at the centre of attending is because she is really discretional with her humor and gustatory sensation. Celemine ever has many visitants at her place that she entertains with her with her discretion about other people. Anyone that is anybody knows that most people thrive on the plants of chitchat, and we can see that Celemine is the ringleader of this chitchat. It appears that that everyone, that attends Celemine? s day-to-day chitchat group, merely throws out names at random and they become the topic of conversation. During one peculiar juncture of chitchat Clitandre says to Celemine, ? But immature Cleon, who is visited by the best people, what do you state of him? ? This is a all right illustration that shows the way of the conversation. Clitandre fundamentally merely mentioned a name to Celemine and she begun to rattle off all of her sentiments about this individual. All of Celemine? s day-to-day chitchat audience besides seems to believ e that Celemine herself is without defect. Because Celemine is so good at conveying out all of the atrocious things about her gossipmongering topics, she appears to be unblemished to everyone. It seems that she has made herself a individual of high authorization, like a justice, merely by speaking bad about everyone else. One illustration that supports the fact that people find Celemine to be perfect is when Acaste says, ? I find her full of grace and appeal. I? ve neer noticed any mistakes in her. ? We can easy see that Celemine is at the centre of attending because she has something that every other character in the narrative wants. She has the love of many work forces, which makes her popular amongst the adult females. She flounders her beauty and promising bosom to every cat, doing them eager to hold her. And, Celemine has dogged discretion about everyone and anyone, giving her the attending that she thrives upon so really much. Celemine seems to hold created herself a silhouette of false semblance that has caused everyone to gravitate towards her. Some how Celemine has managed to do others want her or something of hers. Celemine, through perfidy and recreation, gave herself an image that seemed to be most glorious. This finally all prostrations for Celemine when everyone finds out the truth that she tried so difficult to cover up ; when everyone finds out that Celemine is non every bit sincere to everyone behind his or her dorsums as she is in forepart of them. The people fi nd themselves every bit amongst the epidemy of sheer refuse as the secret plan unwinds towards the terminal of the drama.

10 Research Essay Topics on Hellenistic Philosophies
10 Research Essay Topics on Hellenistic Philosophies If you are tasked with writing your research essay on Hellenistic philosophies, one of the first steps is picking your topic after which you must find suitable facts to substantiate any claim you make as part of unfolding your topic. That being said, below you will find a multitude of interesting facts on Hellenistic Philosophies some of which might make for suitable evidence in your next writing task: After Socrates, Aristotle, and Plato, new philosophical thinking was discouraged by the changing cultural and political climate in Athens. The Greek Empire, founded by Alexander and Philip was conquered by the Romans. Culture of the Hellenistic period is what was left among the Greeks who were still in charge of the centralized state and military. While all people were encouraged to participate in the government as part of the Athenian tradition, individual citizens found that they could no longer contribute to shaping the social structure that led their lives. It is for this reason that Hellenistic philosophers did not spend as much time focused on the ideal state or on how this construction would help people to achieve happiness in life. Instead they were more ethical thinkers who focused on the life of individuals, independent from society. The descriptions put forth focused on the kind of actions and character that would best lead to a life well lived despite the then-current pol itical realities. The Hellenistic philosophers were focused on how people should live when the external circumstances around them are beyond their control. The Hellenistic schools of philosophy did not propose radical changes or solutions to the larger governmental issues of the time, but instead paid attention to personal and individual changes There were two atomists named Democritus and Leucippus who created a systematic description of the world of nature, which was made up of particles, each having mechanical interactions with one another. This accounted for everything happening in the world. Because of such theory, people were paying significant attention to the consequences resulting from their actions. Epicurus was the leading philosopher of the Hellenistic period. He and his followers pointed out that since atoms were indestructible and accounted for the material used by all things in the universe to move and collide this movement was actually beyond the control of people. It was believed that these materials which would never go away, were all being controlled by elements within the larger universe that people could not change and so, even things such as politics were beyond control of people. It is for this reason that human life was a passive thing, and that humans could only experience nature and life but were not capable of changing it in the grand scheme of things. But it was still believed that people could live a good life and in doing so have some control over experiencing pleasant things in life rather than the unpleasant. Epicurus wrote that the goal of human life should be to enjoy mental ease and freedom from any pain. This means that sensual desires are all natural things and that wanting to satisfy them is completely natural too, as satiation is a pleasure in and of itself . However the frustration felt in not satisfying these urges is a form of pain. So to lead a good life free from pain one must satisfy these natural urges. It was also stated that death is the annihilation of personality, and it is not something which can be experienced. Therefore, people should not be afraid of death or bemoan the fact that all lives must end. Epicurus stated that people should relax, they should eat, and drink, and they should live in merriment. Epicurus stated that the most successful life is one in which people attain happiness through personal fulfillment, but in addition to this, people must also seek mental peace which can only come from accepting whatever things happen in life without complaining or struggling. These concepts were rivaled by the Stoics who represented a collection of knowledge put forth by Zeno and Chrysippus. The Stoics believed that there was a naturalistic explanation for people and their behaviors and that each person represented a microcosm of the whole universe. It was Epictetus who promoted that the central component to understanding how few of the occurances in the universe were under peopleââ¬â¢s control. It was he who stated that people must learn to remain stoic and stern in life, accepting the fates that are given without complaint. He also stated that all things in life, including family and friends, will perish and as such people should never become attached to these things and instead view each thing in life as a temporary blessing or a temporary curse, something that will naturally pass away in time. Skepticism was another school of Hellenistic philosophy which illustrated a keen lack of confidence in life, and it stated that human knowledge was severely limited in its application and scope. It was Pyrrho of Elis who originally taught skepticism and touted that people do not have any genuine knowledge or understanding of how things. Because of this they were encouraged to practice a suspension of judgment. Meaning that people can respond rationally to all situations in which they have no information or understanding. Such course of thinking concluded that people generally should not be acting at all. This is what brings about the essential peace of mind so heavily integrated into skepticism. It was Sextus Empiricus who wrote about a history of the skeptics and in doing so criticized the pretentious thoughts and acts of the other schools. It was this historian who noted that skeptics, who challenged the other popular Hellenistic philosophies of the time, arose from an odd and strict definition of ââ¬Å"knowledgeâ⬠. He argued that people truly know very little due to the fact that they cannot know something unless absolutely certain and was heavily ignored at the time of the statement release. However, later on it was used when the skeptical philosophy had been revived. These facts on Hellenistic Philosophies should give you enough knowledge to start drafting a new academic paper. Andrew Jacksons Big Block of Cheese
Andrew Jacksons Big Block of Cheese Popular legend contends that Andrew Jackson received a big block of cheese at the White House in 1837 and served it to guests at an open house. The incident achieved allegorical status during the run of the television drama ââ¬Å"The West Wingâ⬠and in 2014 it even inspired a dayà devoted to social media outreach from the Obama Administration. In reality, two early presidents, Jackson and Thomas Jefferson, received gifts of enormous blocks of cheese. Both gigantic cheeses were intended to convey a symbolic message, though one was essentially celebratory while the other reflected some political and religious squabbling in early America. Andrew Jacksonââ¬â¢s Big Block of Cheese The better-known enormous White House cheese was presented to President Andrew Jackson on New Yearââ¬â¢s Day 1836. It had been created by a prosperous dairy farmer from New York State, Col. Thomas Meacham. Meacham was not even a political ally of Jackson, and actually considered himself a supporter of Henry Clay, Jacksonââ¬â¢s perennial Whig opponent. The gift was really motivated by local pride in what was becoming widely known as the Empire State. In the late 1830s New York was prospering. The Erie Canal had been open for a decade, and commerce energized by the canal had made New York an economic powerhouse. Meacham believed making a mammoth cheese for the president would celebrate the regionââ¬â¢s spectacular success as a center of farming and industry. Before sending it to Jackson, Meacham exhibited the cheese in Utica, New York, and stories of it began to circulate. The New Hampshire Sentinel, on December 10, 1835, reprinted a story from a Utica newspaper, the Standard and Democrat: â⬠Mammoth Cheese - Mr. T.S. Meacham exhibited in this city on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week a cheese weighing 1,400 pounds made from the milk of 150 cows for four days at his dairy in Sandy Creek, Oswego County. It bore the following inscription: ââ¬ËTo Andrew Jackson, President of the United States.ââ¬â¢ â⬠He also exhibited a National Belt, got up with much taste, presenting a fine bust of the President, surrounded by a chain of twenty-four States united and linked together. This belt is intended for a wrapper to the mammoth cheese when presented to the President.â⬠Newspapers reported that Meacham had also made five other cheeses, each about half the size of the presidential cheese. They were intended for Martin Van Buren, a New Yorker who was serving as vice president; William Marcy, the governor of New York; Daniel Webster, the famous orator and politician; the U.S. Congress; and the legislature of the State of New York. Meacham, the intent of generation good publicity for his project, transported the enormous cheeses with great showmanship. In some towns, the enormous cheeses were paraded on a wagon decorated with flags. In New York City the cheeses were displayed to curious crowds at the Masonic Hall. Daniel Webster, while passing through the city, cheerfully accepted his great cheese from Meacham. The cheese for Jackson was shipped to Washington on a schooner, and the president accepted it at the White House. Jackson issued a letter of profuse thanks to Meacham on January 1, 1836. The letter said, in part: I beg you, sir, to assure those who have united with you in the preparation of these presents, in honor of the Congress of the United States and myself, that they are truly gratifying as an evidence of the prosperity of our hardy yeomanry in the State of New York, who are engaged in the labor of the dairy. Jackson Served the Big Block of Cheese The enormous cheese aged in the White House for a year, perhaps because no one really knew what to do with it. As Jacksonââ¬â¢s time in office was coming close to its end, in early 1837, a reception was scheduled. A Washington newspaper, The Globe, announced the plan for the colossal cheese: The New York present is nearly four feet in diameter, two feet thick, and weighs fourteen hundred pounds. It was transported through the State of New York with a great parade, to the place where it was shipped. It reached Washington accompanied with a splendidly painted emblematic envelope. We understand the President designs to offer this great cheese, which is finely flavored and in fine preservation, to his fellow citizens who visit him on Wednesday next. The New York present will be served up in the hall of the Presidents mansion. The reception was held on Washingtonââ¬â¢s birthday, which was always a day of celebration in early 19th century America. The gathering, according to an article in the Farmerââ¬â¢s Cabinet of March 3, 1837, was ââ¬Å"crowded to excess.â⬠Jackson, reaching the end of eight controversial years as president, was described as ââ¬Å"looking extremely feeble.â⬠The cheese, however, was a hit. It was very popular with the crowd, though some reports said it had a shockingly strong odor. When the cheese was served there arose an exceedingly strong smell, so strong as to overpower a number of dandies and lackadaisical ladies, said an article which appeared on March 4, 1837, in the Portsmouth Journal of Politics and Literature, a New Hampshire newspaper. Jackson had waged the Bank War, and the pejorative term Treasury Rats, referring to his enemies, had come into use. And the Journal of Politics and Literature couldnt resist a joke: We cannot say whether the smell of Gen. Jacksons cheese denotes that he goes out in ill odor with the people; or whether the cheese is to be considered as a bait for the Treasury Rats, who are to be attracted by its scent to burrow in the White House. A postscript to the story is that Jackson left office two weeks later, and the new occupant of the White House, Martin Van Buren, banned the serving of food at White House receptions. Crumbs from Jacksons mammoth cheese had fallen into the carpets and been trampled by the crowd. Van Burens time in the White House would be plagued by many problems, and it got off to a horrible start as the mansion smelled of cheese for months. Jeffersonââ¬â¢s Controversial Cheese The earlier great cheese had been given to Thomas Jefferson on New Yearââ¬â¢s Day 1802 and was actually at the center of some controversy. What prompted the gift of the mammoth cheese was that Jefferson, during the political campaign of 1800, had been harshly criticized for his religious views. Jefferson contended that politics and religion should remain separate, and in some quarters that was considered a radical stance. Members of a Baptist congregation in Cheshire, Massachusetts, who had previously felt marginalized as religious outsiders, were happy to align themselves with Jefferson. After Jefferson was elected president, a local minister, Elder John Leland, organized his followers to make a remarkable gift for him. An article in the New York Aurora newspaper on August 15, 1801, reported on the making of the cheese. Leland and his congregation had obtained a cheese vat six feet in diameter, and used the milk of 900 cows. When our informant left Cheshire, the cheese had not been turned, said the Aurora. But would be in a few days, as the machinery for that purpose was nearly completed. Curiosity about the enormous cheese spread. Newspapers reported that on December 5, 1801, the cheese had reached Kinderhook, New York. It had been paraded into town on a wagon. It was eventually loaded onto a ship which would carry it to Washington. Jefferson received the great cheese on January 1, 1802, and it was served to guests in the unfinished East Room of the mansion. It is believed that the arrival of the cheese, and the meaning of the gift, may have prompted Jefferson to write a letter to the Danbury Baptist association in Connecticut. Jeffersonââ¬â¢s letter, dated the day he received the cheese from the Massachusetts Baptists, has become known as the ââ¬Å"Wall of Separation Letter.â⬠In it, Jefferson wrote: Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man his god, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation between church and state. As might be expected, Jefferson was criticized by his very vocal opponents. And, of course, the mammoth cheese was drawn into the mockery. The New York Post published a poem making fun of the cheese and the man who cheerfully accepted it. Other papers joined in the mockery. The Baptists who had delivered the cheese, however, had presented Jefferson with a letter explaining their intent. Some newspapers printed their letter, which included the lines: The cheese was not made by his Lordship, for his sacred Majesty; not with a view to gain dignified titles or lucrative offices; but by the personal labor of free-born farmers (without a single slave to assist) for an elective President of a free people.

Putting Man on the Moon Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Putting Man on the Moon - Essay Example This paper tells that the news of man going to the moon came about during the Cold War. The Cold War was characterized by a fierce competition between the then Soviet Union and the United States to obtain superpower status and world dominance. The competition involved a show of strength and this invariably necessitated showing proof that one country had better and more destructive weapons and better technology than the other. It is therefore conceivable that the claims of putting a man on the moon were no more than a hoax to convince the world of technological superiority. Be that as it may, both the US and the Soviet Union claim to have accomplished this feat and no scientist stepped forward to state that man cannot land on the moon. Neither have scientists denied that man can orbit in space. Moreover, there is no evidence that the media stories depicting a man on the moon were manufactured. Any view to the contrary is purely speculative. However, it does give one food for thought. Does competition drive success? In other words, if we are in a race to outdo an opponent, can we accomplish anything to show the rival up? It would certainly seem so. The old manââ¬â¢s analogy began to eat away at me and left me pondering several ironies. Every day we are saturated by media reports of national and international conundrums with no sign of relief. For instance, the world recession is spreading and man is powerless to resolve the problem. Likewise, children go missing every day and try as we like, man is powerless to find them and return them to their families safely. Yet man was able to travel to the moon and return safely.

Effects of climate change in an area Term Paper
Effects of climate change in an area - Term Paper Example Introduction To further discuss climate change it is important to discuss what climate change is. Climate change can be identified by, ââ¬Å"a long term shift in climate measured by changes in temperature, precipitation, wind, and other indicators.â⬠(GovernmentofCanada2011). Climate change is basically the result of too much pollution within earthââ¬â¢s atmosphere. The pollution causes the ozone layer to become thin. The thinning of the ozone layer allows earthââ¬â¢s climate to become warmer than usual. The slow increase in earthââ¬â¢s temperature creates an effect on earthââ¬â¢s resources. Because of these changes, oceans, wildlife and nature have been forced to adapt and many creatures and habitats have become unsuccessful in adapting. History of Climate Change Climate change is said to have begun during the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution was a time during the 1800ââ¬â¢s when manufacturing began to take over the world. According to, The Cambr idge Dictionary of Scientist, ââ¬Å"the increase of carbon dioxide has jumped overwhelmingly since the mid 1800ââ¬â¢s.â⬠Studies on carbon dioxide levels show that the concentration of carbon dioxide in ppmvââ¬â¢s has gone up by over one hundred. Many things that one may see and do everyday are contributors to an increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The most common contributor is human transportation. Almost every type of human transportation emits carbon dioxide into the air. Planes, automobiles, trains and anything that burns fuel is a contributor to climate change. Automobiles are not the only contributor. Manufacturing plants are all over the world and can account for huge carbon dioxide emissions. An article by The New York Times explains, ââ¬Å"Eating lunch in a cafeteria can cause climate changeâ⬠(Rosenthal2010). One may contemplate the truth of the given claim. How can eating lunch at a cafeteria cause climate change? The answer is simple. Many of the foods in a cafeteria are produced in a manufacturing facility. Manufacturing facilities create carbon dioxide. When eating foods that have been made by creating harmful gasses, one is contributing to global warming which creates climate change. Climate Change effects on the Ocean Climate change is harmful to the earthââ¬â¢s ocean. Water is a necessary for survival. The ocean, like many other water sources does not stand still. The ocean circulates. The circulation allows for water to remain fresh. The circulation of water is like natures own way of cleaning itself. ââ¬Å"The winds of the air drive most of the oceans circulationâ⬠(Toggweiler2008). The warming climate changes the way that the winds blow. Since the winds are changed, so is the way that the ocean circulates. The changes in water circulation due to climate change have their affects on our oceans. The ocean cools and warms by circulation. It is obvious that the changes in circulation will have its affects o n the ocean. Since the ocean makes up more than half of the earth, it is important to keep the ocean temperatures stable. Change in ocean temperature cause many problems. The warming of the ocean because of climate change and global warming has its affects on ocean life. Coral in the Mediterranean, ââ¬Å"is becoming bleached and no longer produces as vibrant of colorsâ⬠(Global Changing Biology2005). The bleaching of the coral is not the only problem that affects the ocean. Fish and fisherman dependent on fishing are affected by the climate change of

Ethnic Identity and the Maintenance of Heritage Languages ââ¬ËNeither ethnicity nor mother tongue nor even identities can be treated as things, commodities, that one can choose and discard like an old coat at willââ¬â¢ ~Tove Skutnabb-Kangas (qtd in Fishman 55) Broadly speaking, ââ¬Å"language policyâ⬠in the United States is thought of as a covert policy. Schiffman (2000) writes of the challenges of researching this field, given that issues of language are usually addressed subordinately to other issues. In Schiffmanââ¬â¢s view, it is a fallacy to assume that the U.S. government is neutral in regard to issues of language simply because the U.S. does not have an official language; in actuality, the strength of this ââ¬Å"covertâ⬠policy lies in how the government deals with issues of language in conjunction with, for example, education and immigration policies (Schiffman 211). Despite Americaââ¬â¢s history of immigration and linguistic diversity, the only overt piece of legislation passed whose purpose was to protect a specific languageââ¬â¢s use was the Native American Languages Act of 1990 (Schiffman 263), which stated that protecting Native American languages was the ââ¬Å"policyâ⬠of the United States g overnment. From the 19th century onward, English, then, has served as a ââ¬Å"de factoâ⬠language of the United States, although no laws in addition to the previously mentioned act have been enacted to protect the rights of speakers of languages other than English. Many researchers have pointed out how the federal government did not intervene in issues of language, because the right to speak a language was considered a natural extension of living in a democratic society, and therefore did not have to be protected under the law (as cited in Bey... ...;!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> ââ¬Å"Steve.â⬠Personal Interview. 28 April, 2003. Analysis Short Story Content Essay - 2326 Words
Short Story Content Analysis Essay What is the point of any piece of great literature? Or rather, what is great literature? Some would say that accomplished literature is a way of exceptionally telling a story. However, what is the point of storytelling? In many cases, stories are told for entertainment. However, most stories have a moral or theme conveying an important message about life or how to live it. This is the point of great literature, to convey this message beautifully. Some pieces of great literature are The Story-Teller, by Saki, Geraldine Moore the Poet, by Toni Cade Bambara, and Enemy Territory, by William Melvin Kelley. To understand the themes of great literature, you must also understand how to analyze it. The contentâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This brings us to the next story, which is also told in third person. ââ¬Å"Geraldine Moore the Poetâ⬠, by Toni Cade Bambara, is a story told in third person that centers on a girl who has lost her home. There are two major settings in the story. The first is at her building. This is an important setting because that is where she finds out that she has lost her house. It is where she sees her items in boxes and has to eat tomato soup for dinner instead of chicken and dumplings. This is also an important setting because it fuels Geraldineââ¬â¢s pessimistic feelings and the way she acts in the second major setting. The second setting is in Mrs. Scottââ¬â¢s classroom when Geraldine is asked to write a poem. This setting is important because it builds up to the final theme. Furthermore on the setting, the story takes place during recessed times in the city. It is most likely in the city because on the way home, Geraldine passes by a hot dog man, which is common in the city but uncommon elsewhere. It is in recessed times because the hot dog manââ¬â¢s business does not seem to be faring well, and neither does Geraldineââ¬â¢s. This is because they are living in recessed times when the economy is not doing well. The major mo ods in the story are sympathy and hope. It is sympathy because all of these unfortunate things are happening to Geraldine and she seems currently to have aShow MoreRelatedThemes of Filipino Komiks Short Stories: a Content Analysis Themes of Filipino Komiks Short Stories: a Content Analysis Themes of Filipino Komiks Short Stories: a Content Analysis5271 Words à |à 22 PagesTHEMES OF FILIPINO KOMIKS SHORT STORIES: A CONTENT ANALYSIS ABSTRACT This study is a content analysis of the various themes, sub-themes and the types of endings contained in the short stories in Filipino comic books, thereafter referred to in its vernacular form, komiks.
